Creswick’s possum fibre is grown in New Zealand, due to possums being protected in Australia as a native species. Currently, in 2022 – possums are classified as a pest in New Zealand, so obtaining fibre is practiced ethically to protect environmental sustainability and reduce ecological threat on native flora and fauna.
Possum fibre is the third warmest in the world – with it being 55% warmer than Merino and 35% warmer than cashmere. So, when you need to keep warm – possum is the perfect winter wardrobe selection. Soft possum fibre also creates a fabric that rivals the softest cashmere for its look and feel. Creswick’s possum knitwear is versatile and durable, whilst remaining lightweight and breathable.
Possum merino garments also resist the absorption of odour and are pill-resistant, meaning they won’t need to be cleaned as frequently as other natural fibres. However, as with any delicate natural fibre – it will need to be cared for properly to maintain its advantageous qualities.
As possum fibre is so delicate, it becomes impossible to produce 100% possum fibre garments. It must be blended with merino wool or other natural fibres to make sure the shape and feel of the product is not compromised.
Some other benefits of possum fibre include:
- Lightweight but extremely warm
- Soft
- Odour resistant
- Regulates temperature
- Resistance to wrinkles
- UV and fire protective
- Resistance to pilling
Follow our care instructions carefully to ensure the longevity of your beautiful possum piece from Creswick Woollen Mills.
Remember to check the recommended care instructions on the label of your product for more appropriate cleaning advice.
Hand Washing Instructions:
- Rinse using warm water and wool detergent. Be careful not to over-lather the garment, a small amount of wool detergent is all that’s required. You won’t need to rub or wring the garment forcefully. Simply remove all dirt particles from the fabric gently.
- Roll in a towel to absorb the water within the garment. Then dry flat to ensure the fibres in the garment are not damaged. Additionally, do not expose to excessive heat – this will cause major shrinkage in your possum garment.
Remember not to tumble dry or bleach your possum products – alternatively, take your garment to a dry cleaner instead for better results.
Care for your possum fibre-products the right way in 2022 – you’ll thank us later…
