Understanding Microns

What Is A Micron?

A micron is a measurement used to define the diameter of wool fibre. In the case of lambswool, the micron can vary considerably. The diameter of the fibre is the most important characteristic when determining the value and use of the wool.

The finer the micron, the softer the wool may feel. For instance, a Fine Merino Wool Blanket at Creswick Woollen Mills is lighter in weight than a traditional wool blanket. These blankets are made from 18.5 – 19.5 micron Australian Merino Wool and not only are they light to feel but the warmth of the blanket is also enhanced by the finer micron which acts as a superior insulator compared to heavy blankets.

The microns of merino wool can be explained as follows:

  • The average merino wool is about 21-22 micron
  • Fine merino is around 18.5 -19.5 micron
  • Superfine is 15-18.5 microns
  • Ultrafine is anything less than 15 microns

Key Features of Microns

Fine merino wool features a softer, finer micron – ensuring less prickle on skin than other heavier blankets or garments. Further, the greater value of finer, softer microns in a merino wool product – the greater level of insulation a fine merino wool product will have. This is due to the crimped nature of merino wool fibres, creating tiny air pockets which allow heat to be retained on those colder months.

Fine merino wool also features enhanced breathability in the warmer months. This is due to the hygroscopic nature of fine merino wool fibre. Fine merino wool absorbs natural moisture and body vapour when a person is too hot, then evaporates moisture accordingly without compromising its insulate nature. The lightweight 400gm fabric in fine merino wool blankets proves beneficial in maintaining a consistent, comfortable temperature for any season.
