Airing it regularly and storing it away in a suitable manner when not in use are crucial factors to help maintain your quilt’s freshness and deluxe softness. Can you help me decide the advantage of regal dual alpaca quilt versus the regal? What is the difference between Regal and Regal Dual?

She hasn’t included anything about the clips and being able to separate the dual which is the main feature. Include this in our FAQ reply. I.e. Answer:

  • Regal (500gsm) – Fixed winter weight quilt.

  • Regal Dual (300gsm + 200gsm) – Two separate quilts that can be clipped together to create a 500gsm winter quilt, or used individually in warmer months.

➕ New information provided:
The Dual option offers flexibility for households that want seasonal adaptability without storing multiple quilts.

What is the difference between the Sapphire and Regal Alpaca Quilts?

Both the Sapphire and Regal quilts are:

  • 100% Alpaca fill
  • 100% Cotton sateen casing
  • Australian made

The key difference is weight (GSM) and warmth level:

  • Sapphire – 400gsm
Designed for year-round use in moderate climates. Lightweight feel with excellent warmth.
  • Regal – 500gsm
Heavier winter-weight quilt designed for colder conditions.
  • Regal Dual – 300gsm + 200gsm (can be combined to 500gsm)
Offers flexibility — use individually in warmer months or combine for full winter warmth.

New information provided: GSM (grams per square metre) refers to the weight of the filling. A higher GSM generally means a warmer quilt, but alpaca’s thermal efficiency means it can feel warmer than expected for its weight.

Is the Sapphire Alpaca Quilt warm enough for winter?

The Sapphire 400gsm quilt is designed for year-round use and is suitable for most Australian climates.

For a typical southern Australian winter (such as Melbourne), many customers find 400gsm sufficient — particularly if:

  • The home is insulated
  • Heating is occasionally used
  • A blanket can be layered on very cold nights

If you prefer extra warmth or feel the cold easily, the Regal 500gsm provides additional insulation.

New information provided: Alpaca fibre is semi-hollow, which traps heat efficiently. This allows a 400gsm alpaca quilt to feel comparable to a heavier wool quilt, while remaining lighter in weight.

What are the benefits of alpaca over wool in a quilt?

Alpaca fibre offers several advantages:

From Denise’s information:

  • Alpaca is physically lighter than wool
  • Approximately 20% warmer than wool
  • Highly breathable
  • Semi-hollow fibre structure

New information provided:

Additional benefits include:

  • Lighter feel on the body – Ideal for those who prefer warmth without heaviness.
  • Excellent drape – Alpaca tends to sit and contour softly over the body.
  • Low lanolin content – Unlike wool, alpaca contains very little lanolin, which can make it feel softer and less prone to odour retention.
  • Temperature regulation – Helps reduce overheating while still retaining warmth.

This makes alpaca particularly suited to people who want a quilt that feels light but insulates efficiently.

Which alpaca quilt is best for someone who prefers lightweight but warm?

For someone who prefers lightweight but warm, the Sapphire 400gsm is typically the ideal choice.

It provides:

  • Strong thermal performance
  • Reduced weight compared to 500gsm
  • All-year versatility

If additional warmth is needed during peak winter, layering with a blanket is an effective option.

➕ New information provided: Because alpaca fibres trap heat efficiently, increasing GSM increases warmth without dramatically increasing weight — but many customers find 400gsm strikes the best balance between warmth and comfort.

How do I care for an Alpaca Quilt? Can I spot clean between dry cleans?

Alpaca quilts are dry clean only.

For maintenance between annual dry cleaning:

➕ New information provided:

  • Spot cleaning:
Use a clean cloth with cool water and a very mild wool-safe detergent. Gently blot — do not soak or rub.
  • Steam cleaning:
Light steaming of the outer cotton casing can help refresh and sanitise the surface, but avoid saturating the filling.
  • Preventative care:
Using a quilt cover is strongly recommended to protect against body oils and staining, particularly along the top edge.
  • Avoid machine washing:
Hot cycles or agitation can damage natural fibres and compromise loft and structure.

If regular top-edge staining is a concern, a removable decorative top cover or washable throw folded over the upper section can help protect the quilt.

What is the difference between a quilt, doona and duvet?

In Australia, “quilt” and “doona” are used interchangeably. A duvet is the European term for the same product. All refer to a filled bedding insert designed to be used with a quilt cover.

Is a quilt the same as a blanket?

No. A quilt contains a filled interior (alpaca, wool, down or synthetic), while a blanket is a single layer of fabric. Quilts provide greater insulation.

Are quilts warmer than blankets?

Yes. Because quilts trap air within the fill, they provide more consistent insulation than a blanket alone.
