The Heart and History of Creswick Woollen Mills – A Story of Tenacity and Vision

The Heart and History of Creswick Woollen Mills – A Story of Tenacity and Vision

The story of Creswick Woollen Mills began in 1947, founded by Polish migrant Paul Ryzowy. His tenacity and foresight transformed a humble family-run business in the township of Creswick, into an industry leader, quickly diversifying from high-quality fabrics for fashion to the iconic Billabong picnic rugs, and Alpaca blankets.

Paul’s ingenuity established Creswick as Australia’s last remaining coloured wool spinning mill. Its lasting success, despite international competition, speaks to the values he instilled. Today, his grandchildren, Boaz and Sharon Herzsfeld, proudly carry on his legacy of innovation, community collaboration and a deep passion for natural fibres.

Why Did We Bring Our Natural Fibre Expertise to Your Bedroom?

For over 75 years, nestled in the heart of country Victoria, Creswick Woollen Mills has been creating exceptional natural fibre products. From the warmth of our iconic blankets to the elegance of our apparel, we’ve dedicated ourselves to crafting pieces that bring comfort and quality into your life.

You might be asking, “Why beds?” The answer is deeply rooted in our heritage, and our unwavering belief in the power of natural fibres.

A Legacy of Listening: The Path to Natural Sleep

Our move into natural sleep products was a natural evolution, inspired by listening closely to what our customers truly want. We saw a growing demand for healthier, more natural sleep solutions – and realised there was a gap where synthetic materials had previously dominated the market.

As Boaz Herszfeld puts it: “We set ourselves a challenge to take synthetic layers out of a standard mattress and replace the with beautiful natural fibres”

In 2022 to commemorate our 75th anniversary, we proudly launched a locally made, wool-rich mattress, and expanded our range to include bed bases, frames and now, Australian-made quilts – all thoughtfully designed to support better sleep.

The result? A whole new way to sleep – naturally.
